Summer 2013 Book Challenge

30 August 2013--Completed!

I found yet another appealing book challenge, through Bev at My Reader's Block.

The Summer 2013 Book Challenge from Semi-Charmed Life has caught my fancy.  I don't know if I'll finish all of the challenge, but I always find it enjoyable to stretch myself with reading goals.

Rules:
  • The challenge will run from July 1, 2013, to September 30, 2013. No books that are started before 12 a.m. on July 1 or finished after 11:59 p.m. on September 30 will count.
  • No re-reads (unless specifically stated)! I want you to experience new books with this challenge.
  • Each book must be at least 200 pages long. Audiobooks are fine, as long as the print versions meet the page requirements.
  • A book can only be used for one category. If you want to switch the category later, that's fine, just be sure to account for that in your point total.

The Challenge:

  • 5 points: Freebie! Read any book you'd like, as long as it follows the above rules. :)
The Barakee Mystery by Arthur Upfield; 336 pages.  (July 2013)
  • 5:  Read a book that is less than 150 pages long.
  • The Thirty-Nine Steps by John Buchan; 148 pages (July 2013/audio)
  • 10: Read a book with a color in the title.
The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey by Walter Mosley; 288 pages (July 2013)
  • 10: Read a book that is not the first in its series. (And yes, it must be in a series.
The Saturday Big Tent Wedding Party (12th in the series) by Alexander McCall Smith; 240 pages (August 2013)
  • 15: Read a book it seems everyone but you has read!
The Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury; 256 pages.  I was late in "discovering" Bradbury--it seems that all my fellow fantasy and sci fi literary nerds had read this long ago!
    (July 2013)
  • 15: Read a banned book.
    Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell, 267 pages.(August 2013/audio)
  • 20: Read a book written by a celebrity.
If You Ask Me (And of Course You Won't) by Betty White; 272 pages (July 2013/audio)
  • 20: Read a non-fiction book that is not a memoir.Becoming Myself: Embracing God's Dream of You by Stasi Eldrige; 256 pages; Christian Living nonfiction. (July 2013) My review is posted here.

The Four Month Challenge (Part 12)

I started this blog with the intention of using it to encourage myself in my homemaking and crafting.  Now, it seems this blog is in danger of becoming more of a book blog!  Not that it really matters, as it's my blog and nothing says "me" more than books!

That being said. . . I stumbled on yet another super fun looking reading challenge!

This one is a four month challenge, going from May through August.  Even though I'm a month late joining, I have my reading list from last month, so hopefully some of them will fall into these categories.  I can't wait to see how many points I can earn! :)

There weren't any specific "rules" (always troublesome for a rule-follower), but here is the official page for joining and updating progress.  I'm joining in late, as usual, but hopefully that will not be a problem!

Vintage Mystery Reading Challenge

I am really not sure how I stumbled upon My Reader's Block and her Vintage Mystery Reading Challenge, but I am glad I did!  Cozy, vintage mysteries have been my desired genre for most of this year, so it fits right in with this challenge!

The rules: All novels must have been originally written before 1960 and be from the mystery category (crime fiction, detective fiction, espionage, etc.), and each book may only count for one category. Once you have met the 8 book minimum, you may repeat any category (except the last one) any number of times to reach the 16+ level.

An added bonus to joining in the challenge is this: Everyone who completes the 8 book minimum will be entered for a prize drawing at the end of the year. Anyone who completes 16 or more books will automatically receive their choice from a prize list.

The Chief Legatee (1906) by Anna Katherine Green (January 2013) This is the oldest mystery I have read to date (June 2013).  It is also notable for being the most convoluted that I have read thus far.  I'll admit though, that despite the Gothic/Romantic plot themes and the fact that this wasn't Green's best, I did rather enjoy it.

I slightly condensed some of the category descriptions for the sake of space; please go to the original site to see full description of each category.

A-Z Reading Challenge

I love lists and I love books and I find that reading challenges combine these two to great advantage!

I used to keep up with book challenges on my former book review blog.  Even though I quit updating that blog and reading other book blogs, I still kept up with this A-Z challenge, for my own enjoyment.  Now that I'm blogging again, I thought it would be fun to find a few book challenges.  This is a given since, like I said, I've been doing it for years.  I don't always complete the author challenge, but I generally do well with the title.  I completed the titles last year, but still lacked E, I, J, K, N, Q, T, U, X, and Y for authors.

Escape with Dollycas is hosting the A-Z Challenge for book titles.
It is pretty self explanatory.  Read one book that begins with each letter of the alphabet.

I am also attempting to do this with authors' surnames, though that is not included in this challenge.  It will just be my extra challenge.

A  After House (the) by Mary Roberts Rhinehart  (March 2013)
